FAQs

Why was Houston, Texas, selected as the headquarters site for Americas Styrenics?
Houston is recognized as a leading petrochemicals hub and it is centrally located among the facilities owned by Americas Styrenics.

What is the executive make-up of the JV?
The JVs executive team equally represents both parent companies. Both Dow and Chevron Phillips Chemical view all leadership roles as extremely important positions in driving the long-term success of the venture.

How many employees are moving into Americas Styrenics?
Approximately 600 employees (Chevron Phillips Chemical 60%, Dow 40%)

When did the joint venture receive approval from the Federal Trade Commission?
September 2007

What is Dows and Chevron Phillips Chemicals participation in the JV?
Dow and Chevron Phillips Chemical will be equal partners with each holding a 50 percent stake.

Will commercial operations be limited to the Americas? Will the JV export products outside this region?
The primary focus of Americas Styrenics will be to sell polystyrene and styrene in the Americas.  In some cases the venture may participate in the worldwide merchant styrene market, but there are no current plans to expands the JVs market for polystyrene outside the Americas.

Why is Dow including 6 plants in the JV, but Chevron Phillips Chemical only 2?
Dow and Chevron Phillips Chemical are equal partners in the joint venture at 50 percent. The plants differ in their size, capacities, technology and product capabilities.

Are energy and U.S. feedstock prices a factor in creating this venture?
Certainly energy and feedstock costs in North America have affected the polystyrene industry and thus indirectly have impacted this deal. As a new company that remains rooted in the Americas, the JV will continue to manage the challenges with natural gas and crude oil prices in the United States. However, the venture is fully integrated and balanced in styrene as a feedstock, which is a compelling element of this deal.
