Range of Work Includes:

  • Polystyrene research including new catalyst development, application and process development; commercial process design and process support
  • Extension and platform projects
  • Analytical and mechanical testing
  • Technical and service support for customers worldwide
  • Patent support
  • Research and technology administration

Research and Development Conducted at Three Levels:

  • Laboratory – bench scale
  • Pilot plant scale
  • Molding and extruding of polymer and copolymer resins

Facility Facts:

In 1995, the pilot plant was established inside the Marietta Polystyrene Plant and in 1996 the applications lab was built in an adjacent building. Approximately 15 chemists, engineers, technicians and support staff are now employed at the facility and the engineering staff also serves as day-to-day technical support for polystyrene plant operations.

Operational Highlights:

  • Extremely successful in developing pilot plant resins and scaling up to a commercial line.
  • Cooperation with clients in developing new lines on fabrication equipment.
  • Due to the location within the plant, projects can move quickly from idea generation, to bench scale, to pilot plant, to application testing and to commercial line.

Major Accomplishments:

  • Improved processes by changing chemical initiation to improve overall rubber efficiency, enabling the development of tougher HIPS products.
